Over the last 20 years, we have seen a gradual change in the approach to the provision of services to people with disabilities. The methods of work in Ukraine are becoming closer and closer to those used in European countries. While large cities and private institutions have specialists and the opportunity for their trainings, it is not easy to learn new approaches and get modern material to work on the basis of public institutions, regional centres and villages. It is also difficult to find ready-made skilled workers who will agree to work for a low salary in a public institution in remote areas.
However, we managed to find a way to improve the skills of employees of the institutions where we carry out our work and at the same time give such an opportunity to other people – students, interns, parents who take care of their children with certain developmental disorders at home. This is a form of master classes directly in the institution and directly with their inhabitants. The Committee invites special education teachers, weavers, physiotherapists, fellers, and specialists in other fields of interest for a week or two. Together with our employees, they are looking for the most effective approaches to work in the existing conditions and with these inhabitants.
We also believe that visits to similar institutions both abroad and in major cities of Ukraine are a good motivation. We also try to provide such opportunities to employees of both the Vilshany Orphanage and the Centre “Parasolka” (Tyachiv).
