Frederick Wiseman’s film, Ex Libris: The New York Public Library, goes behind the scenes of one of the greatest knowledge institutions in the world and reveals it as a place of welcome, cultural exchange and learning. The library, with its 92 branches throughout Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten island, sees its mission as being a resource for all the inhabitants of this multifaceted and cosmopolitan city. The New York Public Library is a manifestation of a deep-rooted American belief in the right of everyone to know and be informed. It is one of the America's most democratic institutions - the library welcomes everyone. The library aims to inspire people to learn, develop knowledge and strengthen communities.

In the modern world, the books have become available to a large number of people. Every year, new book stores are opened, large editions of publishers give the opportunities to sell books at relatively affordable prices, the network can find electronic versions of texts and download them to your smartphone or e-book, or even listen to the book in audio format.

At the same time, a network of public libraries continues to exist in Ukraine, there are about 16 thousand f them. How do they respond to such trends?

Can the public libraries take on new functions of information, cultural, training and community centres? How can their premises and resources be useful to the community of the neighborhood, city or village where they are located? Can a library be truly inclusive and offer events to vastly different social groups?

Let's say the New York city's main public library hosts extended primary school groups, lectures on atheism, and events like job fairs. And what is atypical in the public libraries of Ukraine and what effect does it have? What is the role of libraries in the modern society?

On the occasion of showing the film "Ex Libris: New York Public Library" by American Director Frederick Weizman, we invite you to discuss these and other similar issues with the practitioners and experts from the library and cultural environment, as well as the representatives of library support projects.

Talk with the writer Andriy Lyubka.
Moderator: Evgenia Napuda, acting  head of the Scientific and Methodological Department in Transcarpathian Regional Universal Scientific Library named after F. Potushnyak
